If you are a keen ski fanatic then you must be familiar with the name Franciso Fernandez Ochoa, the only Winter Olympic gold medalist from Spain. He was a very competitive and an outstanding athlete, he won gold in the men’s special slalom event at the 1972 games in Japan when it was unfeasible for Spain.

The Spanish Skier Ochoa, 56, was struggling with cancer for long and succumbed to the disease on Monday, as confirmed by the Cadena Ser radio station. Only a week ago he received a tribute with Princesses Cristina and Elena unveiling a statue of the skier in his home town of Cercedilla, this was the legends last public appearance.

Sports minister Jaime Lissavetzky told Radio Marca.

“He was a great champion and a magnificent person, We all remember his triumph as if it were yesterday and no one has been able to equal his achievement since.”

He may have departed but he has registered his name in the history books for his awesome achievements, and will certainly remain an icon for all the skiers...May his soul rest in peace.
